About My Clients
My clients are motivated to learn about themselves and discover the things that interfere with their living their best life possible. Clients come to me with addiction issues and may be struggling with ambivalence towards changing, or are motivated to give up self-destructive patterns of behavior. Clients might be anywhere along the path towards coming out and stepping fully into their sexual identity.
My Background and Approach
I approach each client with the assumption that you are coming to me with an intention to alleviate discontentment or suffering. I see my job as helping you articulate your reasons for seeking therapy, to understand the source of your issues, and to find strategies that bring relief. My style is interactive, with an emphasis on caring and supportive feedback. I expect the client to establish the agenda for each session, trusting that the client knows best what needs to be addressed in any given session. I emphasize psychoeducation about the role of, and differences between, thoughts, feelings and behaviors. My theoretical orientation can be described as Integral, an approach that's based on the work of Ken Wilber and best fits under the transpersonal label. My work is further informed by Buddhist philosophy and psychology.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Here's a radical idea--what if you're not a victim of circumstances? I'm not suggesting that you haven't had challenging or even traumatic experience--of course that's possible! What I'm suggesting is that what matters most isn't what has or hasn't happened to you; rather, what matters most is how you respond to things. This is an empowerment-based philosophy the reinforces the idea that from an ultimate perspective, the only thing we truly have control over is how we relate and respond to the circumstances of our lives. I'm deeply invested in helping clients develop an empowered posture to their lives.
