About My Clients
You need therapy that will teach you concrete skills to help improve your life right now, not aimless therapy that only makes you feel better for the day. My typical clients are professionals who have come to realize that negative thoughts are keeping them from achieving their full potential at work and/or in their personal lives. Many of my current clients had tried therapy prior to seeing me and did not find it helpful as they did not get concrete skills to deal with distress.
My Background and Approach
I am a Clinical/Health Psychologist based at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. I use empirically-supported treatments to help my clients make lasting changes using the shortest number of sessions. I am trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), but utilize multiple other approaches (e.g., DBT & ACT) to help clients meet their goals. CBT can often help to address cognitive and behavioral drivers of the problems clients are experiencing, but can sometimes be invalidating as its premise is that problems are caused because of the way YOU are thinking. I incorporate DBT, which takes into account invalidating environments and other causes of current complaints rather than just the client themselves. As such, most clients find my style to be appropriately challenging, yet very affirming and supportive.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
My personal philosophy is that many of us are navigating a world that was not built for us and few people are privileged in all aspects. Most of us possess some characteristic or identity that is not fully embraced or is invalidated by our environment. I realized this with my own personal identity as a gay Black male. This typically can result in negative thoughts and behaviors that only work to maintain our distress. What the world doesn't teach us is that these identities are also a strength. As such, I seek to provide a validating and affirming environment in which people can discuss their issues and work towards their therapy goals.
